Watch Her Voices: The Studio D Story, part of the NFB Pioneers Series by Lucia Piccinni (2007)
From 1974-1996, Studio D (co-)/produced over 140 films, mostly short documentaries but also some animated shorts and one feature length drama. It innovated the development of the “quilt film” : 1-5 minute long films stitched together into an immersive experience of feminist expression. Such experiments allowed for wider participation across the country, drawing more women into filmmaking at a time when they were severely under-represented. It also found ways to repackage and distribute films from the NFB catalogue with a uniquely feminist perspective, like the Working Mother Series or How They Saw Us.
